Angel Olsen - "Forgiven/Forgotten"

This is our first real music post and I'm so excited to dedicate it to Angel Olsen.

Where to start...

How about this: Angel Olsen is one of my favorite singers of all time. Perhaps my favorite of this time we are currently living in.

She is in old soul who often sings about the ephemeral time spent living in her body. Perhaps it's this awareness that allows her to tap into some sort of ghosts, angels, or other-worldliness that seems to rise out of her. That's the only way I can describe her voice. It's honest, pure and sweet, yet strong and devastating. It's sometimes reminiscent of old time country/yodeling but has a life of it's own.

Her first EP, "Strange Cacti" (Bathetic Records) is a lo-fi collection of feverish, haunting songs featuring only Angel and her guitar - and maybe some other sort of energies. It sounds as if it were recorded during a seance, with Angel as the medium. ("Creator, Destroyer" is one of my favorites). In 2012 she released an album, "Half Way Home" (also on Bathetic) and that's when I really fell in love. The LP is still pretty stripped down, but features some backing and is a little more produced, allowing her voice to cut through clearly. While it features some upbeat songs (like one of my favorites, "The Waiting") most of them are down-tempo, minimal folk songs. Through her lyrics and the urgency in her voice you get a sense that she's been through some shit, but she doesn't reveal too much, always leaving the listener wanting more.

Well she's finally giving us more, and for Olsen fans the release of her new single "Forgiven/Forgotten" comes as a surprise. Backed by a full band it's a fuzzy, driven 2-minute punch in the gut, which I'm sure you didn't even know you wanted, but now you do. Her fever remains but it comes with a little more energy on this glimpse into her new album, "Burn Your Fire For No Witness" (coming out this year in February on Jagjaguwar).

Personally, I'm thrilled with the direction of Angel Olsen's new single and CAN'T WAIT to hear the new album. Also, she's playing at The Echo on March 2nd. (OMG!)
